Nectar FAQs
Nectar and the Woodland Trust
Nectar is a loyalty card scheme in the UK, run by Nectar 360 Ltd owned by Sainsbury’s. The scheme is the largest in the UK, and comprises a number of partner companies including Sainsbury's.
Sainsbury's who own Nectar is the Woodland Trust’s largest retail corporate partner. We have worked together since 2004, with the Woodland Trust benefiting from donations from sales of free range eggs, chicken, turkey, apples and honey. Since the partnership began, Sainsbury's has raised over £10 million, which has funded the planting of over 4.2 million trees across the UK – helping us engage with thousands of communities and helping children to reconnect with nature.
Nectar Cardholders who join the WT as a new member will receive 20 nectar points per £1.00 of membership fee* as a reward, new and existing members will be able to receive bonus points when specific Sainsbury’s products in the woodland range including woodland eggs, woodland chicken, woodland turkey, best of British apples, Woodland Trust jute bags for life and woodland cards are purchased and Nectar cardholders will be able to donate points to the Woodland Trust.

Sainsbury’s and Nectar works with the Woodland Trust to help restore the natural environment and support biodiversity through the planting and protection of native woodland and trees in the UK.
The Woodland Trust partnership will be promoted through a number of Sainsbury’s and Nectar’s internal and external communication channels and branding on a range of woodland products including free range eggs, chicken, turkey, apples, bags for life and honey.
In 2021 the partnership with Sainsbury’s and Nectar will enable the planting of over 345,000 new native UK trees.
The trees will be planted in a grove at the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood, Normanton le Heath.
We have reserved 3,000 trees for the Nectar Partnership which is approximately two hectares (5 acres).
The scheme will remain open for three years initially. The Woodland Trust plants over 4 million trees per year so we are confident we will get enough trees!
We will look to allocating another site if we receive too many donations to plant a tree at Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood.
No, the tree species planted will be selected based on our research of the site and agreed management plan, all trees will be native and sourced and grown in the UK.
No, we do not have any community tree planting events planned for this site at the moment but please look at our events page on our website where tree planting events for our sites will be promoted.
No, there will be a plaque naming the ‘Nectar Grove’.
This element of the scheme is for new members only. As an existing member of the Woodland Trust, you can earn additional bonus points when you shop in store for specified woodland products.
5,000 points equates to around 1 tonne of carbon. You can redeem as many points as you have against the equivalent tonnage of carbon.
Using online calculators, you can work out the carbon you use as a family and then lock that carbon up by donating to the Woodland Trust (the average person's yearly carbon footprint is 5.5 tonnes of CO2).
Because the partnership with Nectar is for Collectors who are also members of the Woodland Trust.
Sainsbury’s (who own Nectar) are a long-standing Woodland Trust partner, and this scheme falls within the parameters of this partnership and therefore is not costing the Woodland Trust anything.
We hope to gain approximately 3,000 new members in year 1 of the partnership.
The Woodland Trust systems are more robust than ever and have enhanced security systems in place following the recent cyber-attack, so in fact everything is very secure, and people should feel very confident in giving data. Please read our supporter promise for more details.
